Team Apache and Young Hawks competed in the Mid-Summer Classic on the weekend of June 15 & 16, 2013 at beautiful Bryan Park in Greensboro.
This year’s Blackhawks MSC teams — representing 14 different high schools — were short on experience but not on heart and effort. Both teams competed well as 27 players saw their first-ever tournament action. Team Apache nearly knocked off NC state champion Apex, and the Young Hawks beat Rebelax and almost upset Recon Carolina. Over the course of the weekend, the ‘Hawks discovered several future program stars.
For Team Apache, the top scorers were Luke Mulvey (4 goals), Grant Hennigan (2 goals, 1 assist), and Justin Prarie (2 goals). Brian Miller led the team in ground balls with 10, and Ryan McFetters (6 gbs, 6 loose balls caused, 1 assist) and Paul Gulledge (7 gbs, 10 lbcs) led the defenders. Reece Parillo turned in a solid performance in the faceoff game.
For the Young Hawks, the leading scorers were Tim Fiore (7 goals on 10 shots), Ryan Pyles (3 g, 1 a), and Stephen Smith (3 g). Bayley Shiver (14) and Pyles (13) led the team in ground balls. The top defenders were Sam Knibb with 6 ground balls and 11 loose balls caused and Z’Andre Minter with 8 ground balls and 8 loose balls caused. Branson Rives (4 ground balls, 7 loose balls caused) turned in a solid performance as long-pole middie. Jacob Hales was also solid at midfield, gathering 5 ground balls, causing 6 loose balls, and adding an assist. Razaun Dantzer was tenacious throughout the weekend in the riding game and at short-stick middie defense.
